How many clinical hours the Troy University FNP requires

Troy University's 2026-27 MSN Student Orientation Manual puts the Family Nurse Practitioner track at 780 clinical clock hours. NSG 6619 carries 120, NSG 6666 and NSG 6668 carry 180 apiece, and NSG 6680 carries 300. Two other Troy figures still circulate, 135 hours a course in part of the DNP manual and a 705-hour total in the 2021-22 catalog. The 780 hours, course by course

Every student on Troy's FNP pathway meets the same four preceptorship courses in the same order, whether enrolled in the MSN, the post-master's FNP certificate or the post-BSN DNP FNP track. The load is weighted toward the end: the internship alone is more than a third of the total. Troy runs these courses once a year and in sequence, so the order below is also the order of your clinical semesters.

Where the 135-hour figure appears

Troy's 2026-27 DNP Student Orientation Manual prints two versions of the FNP hours. Its Post BSN-DNP Progression section, and item 11 of its preceptorship guidelines, say the first three FNP clinical courses each require 135 clock hours. A course list elsewhere in the same manual gives 120, 180 and 180, matching the MSN manual.

The gap matters for planning. At 135 hours, NSG 6619 would need 15 more hours than the MSN manual asks, while NSG 6666 and NSG 6668 would each need 45 fewer. A preceptor schedule sized for one version can leave you short, or over-committed, under the other.

Both manuals cover August 2026 to July 2027, so neither is simply the stale one. MSN and certificate students see only the MSN manual's 120, 180 and 180; DNP FNP students take the same courses and meet both versions.

The 705 total in the 2021-22 catalog

Troy's 2021-22 Graduate Catalog listed 705 clinical hours for the MSN FNP. Its course line-up was different too: NSG 6613 Advanced Health Assessment Preceptorship stood where NSG 6619 stands now, and the 2024-25 catalog course page and a 2018 Preceptor Information Form both use NSG 6613. That catalog grouped NSG 6680 with NSG 6670, the Role Synthesis Seminar, as the program's role courses.

Put the figures next to each other and one detail stands out. Three courses at 135 hours plus the internship's current 300 comes to exactly 705. Troy does not explain the match, and it does not tell you which figure applies to your cohort; only your faculty advisor can settle that. If you entered the program under an older catalog, raise it early rather than in your final semester.

The same 780 in three Troy programs

The 780 figure is not only an MSN number. The post-master's FNP certificate is 33 credits in Troy's MSN manual, yet it carries the identical 780 hours, because certificate students sit in the same clinical courses as MSN students. The DNP manual lists the same four courses and 780 hours for the post-BSN FNP track. One rule does differ by program: DNP students must file every preceptor form by the drop date, whereas MSN students get a month from the start of classes for each course after NSG 6619.

For DNP students, 780 is a waypoint rather than the finish. The program needs 1,000 clinical hours, with the remainder documented through the synthesis courses NSG 8810 to NSG 8840 and NSG 8880 available at 60 hours per credit for anyone still short. The details are on the 1,000-hour rule.

Hours inside the 47 credits

The four preceptorships carry 14 of the MSN FNP's 47 semester hours: 3 each for the first three and 5 for the internship. The rest are didactic courses, and some are tied to a practicum. The pharmacology and pathophysiology courses, NSG 6649 and NSG 6671, must come before or alongside NSG 6619, and Troy asks for each didactic course and its paired preceptorship in one Student Self-Service registration.

Troy's APEA fee list follows four clinical semesters, pairing semester one with NSG 6619, then NSG 6665, NSG 6667 and NSG 6670. The 2024-25 catalog names NSG 6670 as the co-requisite for NSG 6680. Because a missed form deadline forces you out of both the clinical course and the course paired with it, an hours problem in one course can take a didactic course down with it; the rule is on form deadlines.

Planning while the numbers disagree

Ask about your course in writing.Email your faculty advisor naming the course and both figures, the MSN manual's 120, 180 and 180 and the DNP manual's 135. A written reply settles the question before it becomes an end-of-semester surprise.
Recruit for the larger figure.Until you have that reply, look for preceptor time that covers the bigger number in each course: 135 hours for NSG 6619 and 180 for each primary care course. Spare availability is easy to leave unused; a shortfall in the last weeks is hard to repair.
Count from clearance, not from the first class.Hours count only after faculty clear you, so the real window is the stretch between clearance and the course's last day. The weekly arithmetic is on the clinical hours page.
Keep a running total.Record each shift against the clinical schedule form you filed, so your total is easy to verify when the course closes.

Reaching 780 with preceptors planned ahead

That means knowing early who will cover the head-to-toe exams in NSG 6619, finding the two preceptors NSG 6666 requires, keeping the twice-per-program limit in view as courses stack up, and adding hospital time for the internship where it fits your goals.

Is Troy's FNP 780 or 705 clinical hours?

Troy's 2026-27 MSN and DNP manuals give 780 clinical clock hours across the four FNP courses. The 705 figure comes from the 2021-22 Graduate Catalog, which still listed NSG 6613 for health assessment. If you entered under an older catalog, ask your faculty advisor which requirement applies to you and keep the answer on file.

Do post-master's FNP certificate students complete all 780 hours?

Troy's MSN manual gives the post-master's FNP certificate 33 semester hours and 780 clinical hours, with the clinical courses taken alongside MSN students. How many hours a week does a Troy FNP clinical course take?

Troy sets totals per course, not a weekly number. As plain arithmetic, 180 hours over a 16-week semester is a little over 11 hours a week and 300 hours is close to 19, and both climb if clearance comes late. Your preceptor's clinic days and your course faculty's expectations decide the actual pattern.

Does Troy's FNP include any hospital clinical hours?

Only in the last course. Hospital-setting hours are off limits to FNP students before NSG 6680, according to the MSN manual, and the internship carries 300 of the 780. The three earlier preceptorships all take place outside the hospital, and even in the internship faculty approve each setting.

Can I finish Troy's FNP clinical hours faster?

Not by stacking courses. The MSN manual offers each FNP-specific course once a year, in a fixed order, with no clinical courses in summer, so every preceptorship waits for its slot. Hours are tied to the course you are registered in, so time cannot be banked early. The shortest route is five semesters from a Fall start.
