Who recruits a Troy DNP preceptor

You do, with a possible nudge from faculty. The DNP manual's guidelines for 6000-level courses taken by DNP students on a clinical track say students contact prospective preceptors, and that faculty can assist by suggesting names. That suggestion clause is unique to the DNP manual. The MSN manual has no matching line, so DNP students have one extra source of leads that MSN classmates lack.

A suggested name is still a call you have to make. You reach out, confirm the person fits Troy's rules, and send the paperwork to your faculty advisor. The ways into Troy's DNP

Troy's DNP manual names two entry points and routes a few special cases into them. Post-BSN students begin with 6000-level courses on a clinical track; post-master's students begin at the 8000 level. Your entry point decides which clinical courses you take and what kind of preceptor you need.

Each route has its own guide: the FNP track, the Nurse Leader track and the post-master's DNP. Troy's DNP page links a distinct degree map for each of these routes.

How the 1,000 hours come together

Every Troy DNP graduate documents 1,000 clinical hours, and each route gets there differently. Post-BSN FNP students log 780 hours in the four FNP courses and document the balance across the synthesis courses. Nurse Leader students log 540 leadership hours, counting NSG 8880, and do the same. Post-master's students bring verified hours forward from the master's they already hold.

Those carried-over hours are documented for the DNP Program Coordinator on a Verification of Post-Baccalaureate Clinical Hours. Anyone still short of 1,000 near the end takes NSG 8880 Directed Professional Practicum, which converts each credit into 60 clinical hours, with a ceiling of 180. The DNP manual disagrees with itself on FNP course hours: its Progression section sets 135 per course for NSG 6619, NSG 6666 and NSG 6668, while its course list gives 120, 180 and 180. Ask your faculty advisor which figure your planner uses.

Where the DNP manual's preceptor rules differ from the MSN's

DNP students share several 6000-level courses with MSN students, but their manual words a few rules differently. Plan from the DNP manual, not a classmate's MSN copy.

Credentials: Troy expects a graduate-prepared preceptor with an MSN or DNP, and this manual also lets other preceptors be weighed case by case.
Relatives: a family member is ruled out for MSN students, but the DNP manual's FNP list is silent on relatives. Treat one as off limits unless faculty tell you otherwise.
Signatures: leave the signature line alone; under the DNP manual, preceptors are not asked to sign the Preceptor Information Form.
Deadline: every DNP clinical course shares one cutoff, the final day to drop with no academic penalty, whereas MSN students get a month into the term for courses after NSG 6619.
Shared limits: your employer's unit is off the table, and any single preceptor or site can appear at most twice across the whole program.

Clinical requirements specific to DNP students

Most compliance items match the MSN list and are cleared through ViewPoint Screening. The DNP manual adds a few of its own, and one of them conflicts with the MSN sources.

Entering post-master's? You need a current clinical specialty certification: CNS, NP or CRNA.
The Verification of Post-Baccalaureate Clinical Hours goes to the DNP Program Coordinator.
A drug test and background check come before the first clinical course, then every year.
The DNP manual names professional liability insurance as something Troy University supplies; neither the MSN manual nor the MSN web page mentions it, so check your coverage with the School of Nursing.
Clearance waits until the School of Nursing holds your preceptors' signed contracts, refreshed clinical documents and your schedule.

Anything you log ahead of faculty clearance drops out of your total, however good the experience.

Start terms, planners and time limits

Troy's DNP page lists application deadlines of May 1 for summer, July 1 for fall and November 1 for spring. Troy admits DNP students unconditionally only, and seats are limited. Full-time and part-time semester planners, covering fall, spring and summer starts, are posted inside the DNP Student Organization course on Canvas. Troy nudges full-time students toward a fall start, and post-master's study starts full-time each fall.

The time limit depends on which document you read. Troy's 2026-27 DNP manual sets a five-year limit; the 2025-26 Graduate Catalog instead allows eight years on the post-BSN route and five after a master's. Confirm your own limit with the DNP Coordinator before planning a semester off, and see incompletes, withdrawal and time limits.

The finish line is the same on every route: the Final Competency Evaluation, a DNP Synthesis Project presentation held by distance technology; an abstract submitted to a national conference; a manuscript; and convocation on the Troy campus.

Does Troy find preceptors for DNP students?

Under the DNP manual, reaching out to a prospective preceptor is the student's job, and faculty may help by offering names. No Troy page says the School of Nursing places DNP students. A faculty suggestion helps, but you still make the call, collect the forms and meet the deadline. That search is what we take on, so the names you bring to faculty already fit your track.

Can I enter Troy's DNP with a master's outside nursing?

Yes, at the post-BSN level. Troy's DNP manual routes a master's in another field into the post-BSN entry, which starts with 6000-level courses on the FNP or Nurse Leader track. Nurses holding a non-clinical MSN pick up one of those tracks, with as many as 12 hours credited. The DNP Coordinator confirms how your transcript maps onto a planner.

How many credits is Troy's DNP?

Credits depend on your route, and the figure for yours comes from the 2026-27 Graduate Catalog program of study and the planners Troy posts for DNP students on Canvas. The DNP Coordinator can confirm it before you enroll. The number that holds across every route is the clinical total: 1,000 documented hours.

Is Troy's DNP fully online?

Troy lists the DNP as an online program, with faculty based on the Montgomery, Troy and Dothan campuses; the DNP manual also lists Phenix City. The Final Competency Evaluation is held by distance technology. The in-person moment Troy names is convocation on the Troy campus. Clinical hours happen near you, in a state where Troy can offer clinicals.

Does the DNP manual let a relative precept me?

The DNP manual's FNP preceptor list does not mention relatives, but the MSN manual, written for MSN students in those same 6000-level courses, rules out a relative as preceptor. With the two manuals out of step, choose someone unrelated or get a clear answer from your faculty advisor before you ask a family member.
