What to include in your message

Your program and track, such as MSN FNP, HINL, a post-master's certificate, a DNP track or the RN to BSN
The NSG course the preceptor is for, such as NSG 6619 or NSG 6636
The city and state where you plan to do the hours, and each state that has issued you an RN license

Why each detail matters

Troy sets preceptor rules by course, so the course number tells us which clinicians qualify: an experienced NP, physician, midwife or PA for FNP courses, two preceptors for NSG 6666, and informatics or leadership preceptors for the HINL practicums. Your location and license states show where a match is possible, because Troy will not process a preceptor request outside Alabama until you show a license from that state.

Your semester and deadline show how much time the search has. The hours still needed tell us whether you need a full placement or a second preceptor to finish. Your workplace and preceptor history let us screen out matches faculty would have to turn down. With all of it, the first reply can be specific.

If your deadline is close

Put the due date in the first line of your message. Under the MSN manual, a form that misses Troy's deadline means dropping the clinical course and its co-requisite, so a request with a close date is planned around that date from the first reply.

Before you write, read need a preceptor fast and check two things on your side: that your ViewPoint Screening items run through the end of the semester, and that you are licensed as an RN in the state where you will complete the hours. Questions for Troy itself

Some answers can only come from Troy, and knowing who to ask saves time. Your faculty advisor receives your preceptor forms and answers questions about deadlines, eligibility and the conflicts between the MSN and DNP manuals. Should I know my NSG course number first?

It helps, because Troy sets preceptor rules by course, but it is not required. If you are unsure, give your program, track and the semester you are in, and your placement advisor can place you in Troy's published course sequence and name the clinical course ahead of you.

Is it too early to write before my first clinical semester?

Yes, and earlier is better. Troy's form deadlines are fixed and sites without an existing formal contract take longer, so planning a semester or more ahead gives you the widest choice of preceptors and time to fix any compliance or license gaps before the form is due.

I live outside Alabama. Should I still reach out?

Yes. Include where you live and all the states whose RN license you hold. Troy processes out-of-state preceptor requests only once you show a license in that state, and the online clinical table it links was last updated in 2020, so check the state's current status with the Clinical Placements Specialist too.
