Where Troy's online nursing students can do clinicals, state by state

The four statuses in Troy's table

Troy uses four labels, and the row-by-row table below shows which states carry each one.

• Yes (24 states, Alabama included). Clinical experiences listed as available, including in all four of Alabama's neighbors: Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee.
• Not yet determined (20 states and the District of Columbia). Troy had not settled the question when the table was dated, in states from Arkansas to Vermont.
• No (5 states). Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Montana and New York.
• Applied for authorization (Wyoming only). The application went in on 12/4/20, and no outcome is recorded.

Only a Yes points toward a search, and even that Yes is nearly six years old. For the other three labels, ask Troy before recruiting there.

Rows that come with an extra step

Besides Louisiana and Wyoming, fourteen rows carry a note that changes how a search is set up.

• Board steps. Alaska routes preceptorships with Alaskan preceptors through the Alaska Board of Nursing; in Oregon, Troy must petition the state board before a student starts.
• A Troy faculty member licensed in the state. Required in South Dakota and, for the clinical faculty of record, in Minnesota.
• Coverage. Colorado requires workers' compensation coverage for students in clinical practicums.
• A named Troy contact. Arizona, Montana (despite its No), Tennessee, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin send the approval process to the Clinical Placements Specialist.
• A closed door in 2020. Hawaii's and Kentucky's boards do not approve out-of-state programs, and New York requires NYSED registration or approval before placing students in clinical rotations.

Confirming your state before you recruit

Troy's state authorization page says Troy is still reviewing state-by-state rules for programs with licensure, practicums or internships. With a 2020 table, a short confirmation round beats early recruiting, and two Troy roles answer different parts of it.

2. Ask the Clinical Placements SpecialistCan Troy place clinical hours in your state now, and does a step from the table (a board application, a petition, a licensed faculty member) still apply?

5. Tell your faculty advisorYour later packet then names a state Troy has already confirmed for your program.
