Washington State clinicals for Troy University nursing students
Washington earns a Yes on Troy University's 2020 online nursing table, paired with an instruction to contact the Clinical Placements Specialist about the approval process. The state has a formal gate for distance programs: WABON approves an out-of-state program before it places anyone in Washington clinicals, and those approved placements are meant for Washington residents. What Troy's table and WABON each require
WABON keeps its own roster of approved distance programs from other states, with RN to BSN, MSN and NP tracks on it. Whether Troy is on that roster today is exactly what the Clinical Placements Specialist can tell you, together with the Coordinator of State Authorizations.

WABON's approval rule in plain terms
WAC 246-840-571 asks a lot of a distance school. It must apply to WABON, prove equivalence with Washington's program standards, oversee and grade its students on Washington soil, hold national accreditation throughout and file a report each year. If it teaches ARNP practice in Washington, its faculty there hold Washington ARNP licenses.
The rule may shift. Late in 2025 (the CR-101 notice is dated December 5) WABON began revising its education chapter, sections 500 through 571, and clinical-placement barriers are on the agenda. Check the Board's education page before each semester, and ask Troy whether any change touches your plans.
Preceptor rules that go beyond Troy's
For ARNP students, Washington draws a tight circle around who may precept. No relatives, and no personal friends either. The preceptor must be licensed as an ARNP or as a physician (MD or DO), actively and without encumbrance, in Washington or with an equivalent license from another state. Troy's MSN manual already rules out relatives; the friendship bar is Washington's addition.
Troy's FNP list also names physician assistants, while Washington's rule lists ARNP, MD and DO licenses. Before any paperwork goes in, clear a PA preceptor with your course faculty. Washington bars a preceptor who is your personal friend, not only a relative.
Full practice, the compact and the grant
AANP calls Washington full practice. Since January 31, 2024 the state has been a compact member, so multistate RN licenses work there; Troy asks for licensure in the clinical state and is silent about compact licenses, so ask your faculty advisor. No APRN Compact law has passed in Washington. Troy's proof requirement is on RN license for clinicals.
The legislature's Student Nurse Preceptorship Grant, which WABON administers, pays ARNP, RN and LPN preceptors for each student they take. On one point WABON leaves no doubt: students from out-of-state programs do not qualify their preceptors, even when every clinical day happens in Washington.
Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue dwarfs every other metro in the state; Spokane, the Washington slice of the Portland metro, and Kennewick-Richland come next. Big systems include UW Medicine and MultiCare, plus Providence (based in Renton), PeaceHealth and Virginia Mason Franciscan Health. Every one of them sets its own student rules.

Can I do Troy nursing clinicals in Washington State?
Troy's 2020 table lists Washington as Yes, with the approval process handled through the Clinical Placements Specialist. Washington separately requires WABON approval of any out-of-state distance program before a placement. Confirm both with Troy, and with the Coordinator of State Authorizations, before contacting a single preceptor.
Is Washington residency required for clinicals there?
Per WABON, a placement by an approved out-of-state program is for students living in Washington, and anything else is an exception weighed individually. Can a friend who is an NP precept me in Washington?
No. Washington's rule for ARNP students bars preceptors who are related to the student or personal friends. Troy's MSN manual separately bars relatives. Choose a preceptor you know only professionally, and keep the placement outside your own work setting, which Troy also requires.

WABON's CR-101, filed in December 2025, opened a revision of its nursing education rules, and clinical-placement barriers are one of the named topics. Until new rules take effect, WAC 246-840-571 as written applies. Check the Board's education page and ask Troy before each semester.
