Your RN license and where you can do Troy clinicals
Troy University asks every post-licensure nursing student for an unencumbered RN license that is good where the clinical experience takes place, and it has to stay in force for every day of the semester. That single rule decides where you can look for a preceptor, because a request to precept you in another state stays on hold at Troy until you document a license there.

What Troy's manual says, word for word
The Current RN License section of Troy's 2026-27 MSN Student Orientation Manual calls for an unencumbered RN license, good in the state of your clinical site on every day of the semester, first to last. It then adds the sentence that shapes every search outside Alabama: "Out of state preceptor requests are not processed until evidence of licensure in that state is provided."
Two phrases carry the weight. Unencumbered is generally read as a license without board restrictions or disciplinary conditions; if yours has any condition attached, raise it with your faculty advisor before you recruit anyone. Valid all semester means a renewal date that falls in the middle of a course is something to settle before registration, not something to fix once hours are under way.
The DNP manual carries the same tie between out-of-state clinicals and a license in that state, so the rule reaches every graduate track that uses preceptors.
How each Troy program words the rule
The wording shifts slightly from one Troy document to the next. The table sets the versions side by side.

The DNP line is the only one that names Alabama as an option on its own. Read it together with the manual's out-of-state sentence: if your clinicals will be outside Alabama, plan on a license in that state and confirm the details with the DNP Coordinator's office.
Multistate licenses and Alabama's view
A multistate RN license issued under the Nurse Licensure Compact is valid in the other Compact states. Troy's manuals speak of a license valid in the clinical state and do not discuss the Compact directly, so confirm with your faculty advisor that your multistate license will be accepted as evidence for the state you plan to use, and do it before you approach a preceptor there.
The Alabama Board of Nursing states the same principle from the other direction. Its FAQ for distance and out-of-state programs says post-licensure students, MSN and DNP included, who do clinicals in Alabama need an Alabama or multistate RN license. A Troy student who lives in Georgia or Florida but wants an Alabama preceptor is in exactly that position.
For students near a state line, the practice's street address settles the question. Your license has to cover the state in which the practice sits, whatever state you live in.
Out-of-state clinicals: the license is the first gate
A license in the right state gets your request processed; it does not make the state available on its own. Troy's 2020 online clinical-availability table marks some states Yes, some No and many Not yet determined, and the clinicals-by-state guide shows where yours stands and why that table needs a fresh check.
Some rows in that table attach conditions to the school rather than to you, such as a faculty member licensed in the state. Before paying for a second state license, check with Troy's Coordinator of State Authorizations, along with the Clinical Placements Specialist, that clinicals are open to Troy students where you intend to go.
Your preceptor's license is a separate check
Licenses matter on both sides of a Troy preceptorship. Your RN license qualifies you to be in the clinical setting; the preceptor's license qualifies them to teach you. The Preceptor Information Form packet includes a copy of the preceptor's license, and Troy requires nurse practitioner preceptors for FNP courses to hold an NP license from the state they practice in and to bring a year or more of NP experience.
Troy also accepts physicians, whether MD or DO, as well as nurse midwives and physician assistants for FNP courses, and each of them has a license of their own to copy for the packet. Check the preceptor's license state against the practice address before anyone signs, since a mismatch caught at faculty review costs time you may not have.

Questions Troy students ask
Can I start Troy clinicals before my new state license arrives?
Not until the license is issued. Troy's manual keeps a preceptor request for another state on hold until you provide evidence of a license there, and that license has to cover the whole semester. Apply to that state's board of nursing early, since each board sets its own processing time, and check that Troy can offer clinicals there first.
Does my RN license have to be from Alabama to study at Troy online?
No. Troy ties the license to where your clinicals happen, not to where the school is based. An MSN student doing clinicals in Georgia needs a license valid in Georgia. The DNP wording in the 2025-26 Graduate Catalog names Alabama or the clinical-practice state. Whether Troy can enroll you from your state is a separate state authorization question.
What if my RN license renews in the middle of a semester?
Troy wants the license in force on every day of the semester, opening day to final day, so renew before the old expiration date and send proof of renewal as your program directs. If a renewal is delayed for any reason, tell your faculty advisor at once rather than continuing clinical hours on a license that has lapsed.
Does a license with a board order count as unencumbered?
Troy's pages do not define the term, and boards issue many kinds of orders. Before you recruit a preceptor or register for a clinical course, share the details in confidence with your faculty advisor and get a written answer on whether your license meets Troy's requirement for your program.
Do I need an APRN license during Troy's FNP program?
No. You train under your RN license with an approved preceptor. Advanced practice approval comes after graduation and national certification. In Alabama, that approval expires with the RN license or the national certification, whichever comes first, so the RN license stays central after you finish. The steps are on our Alabama CRNP page.
