Troy University nursing students in Iowa: clinical rules and ARNP preceptors
If you live in Iowa, Troy University's 2020 clinical table is on your side: the row reads Yes, with no note, for all three online programs. Iowa's Board of Nursing does not approve programs from other states, yet it still assigns duties to schools like Troy, and it wants you working under an active license, Iowa-issued or multistate.

Iowa's to-do list for programs based elsewhere
Troy's obligations in Iowa come from a Board page written for schools headquartered in other states. The Board belongs to Iowa's licensing department (Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing), and its list reads like this:
- ask Iowa College Aid, a state bureau, to approve operating in the state
- compliance with Iowa law on top of the rules at home
- data sent to the Board whenever it asks
- active licenses, Iowa or multistate, held by the Troy faculty and preceptors who teach there
- contracts with clinical sites spelling out who does what, leaving faculty in charge of what students learn, and allowing annual review and an exit clause
Whether Troy's SARA status covers the College Aid step is a question for the Coordinator of State Authorizations. Your part is simpler: the license, and a preceptor who satisfies Iowa and Troy alike. The School of Nursing's contracts are described on the agency agreements page.
ARNP preceptors under Iowa's rules
Iowa titles its nurse practitioners ARNPs, and AANP puts Iowa among the full practice states. Under Iowa's ARNP program rule (481 IAC 616.16), most of your precepted experience should come from someone matching your role and population focus, either an ARNP or a physician; the preceptor's license must come from the state where they work; and the written preceptorship agreement is looked at again each year. Iowa also names two approvers for a licensed student's preceptor, the school and the clinical facility, which at Troy means your faculty plus the site.
Iowa nurses who precept can bank the work toward renewal: an organized preceptorship of at least 60 hours converts to 6 contact hours, provided the supervising school documents it. Des Moines, Iowa City and the Quad Cities
About 759,000 people live in the Des Moines-West Des Moines metro, going by 2025 Census Bureau estimates. Cedar Rapids, at roughly 279,000, is next, then Iowa City near 183,000, while the Iowa share of the Davenport-Moline-Rock Island metro is around 175,000. UnityPoint Health, MercyOne and University of Iowa Health Care are among the large systems; each runs its own student intake. In the Quad Cities, keep the site on the Iowa side: Illinois carried a Not yet determined status in Troy's 2020 table, so a practice over the state line may be off limits.
Licensing for Iowa hours
Iowa's implementation of the current compact dates from January 2018. The Board's instruction for licensed students who come to Iowa for clinicals is direct: bring an active license, Iowa's or a multistate one, and follow Iowa Code while you practice. The student exemption in Iowa Code 152.1 will not help, since it shelters only students with no nursing license at all, from any state. Iowa has not enacted the APRN Compact. Troy's license rule adds that your license be unencumbered all semester.

Will Troy let me do MSN clinicals in Iowa?
Troy's 2020 table says clinical experiences can be offered in Iowa, and the entry covers the RN to BSN and DNP too. It is dated December 15, 2020 and makes no licensure call. The MSN program page also warns that each state's approval process decides where the online MSN is offered, so settle Iowa with the Clinical Placements Specialist first.
Iowa license or multistate license: which do I need?
Either one, by Iowa's rules: the Board accepts an active Iowa license or an active multistate license from a licensed student training there. Troy then asks that it be unencumbered and good for every day of the semester, and your faculty advisor confirms which one Troy will take as proof.
What does an Iowa ARNP gain from precepting me?
Continuing education credit. When a supervising school documents a preceptorship of 60-plus hours, Iowa treats it as 6 contact hours for license renewal. Troy itself publishes nothing on preceptor rewards, so this state credit is the one to mention when you ask someone to take you on.
Can an Iowa family physician precept a Troy FNP student?
Yes, on both counts. Iowa's rule wants most precepted time with a same-role, same-population ARNP or physician, and a family physician fits an FNP student. Troy's FNP courses take MDs and DOs as well as PAs, nurse midwives and experienced NPs. Faculty approve the final choice, as with every Troy preceptor.
