Troy University's online nursing disclosure marks Georgia Yes, and Troy's state authorization page names Georgia among its separately authorized states. Georgia's nursing board does no approving of post-licensure programs, so a Georgia placement hinges on licensure (yours, your preceptor's, your instructor's) and on the physician oversight built into Georgia NP practice.

It is dated 12/15/2020 and says nothing about licensure, so clear your Georgia plan first with the Coordinator of State Authorizations, then with the Clinical Placements Specialist.

Georgia's Board and out-of-state programs
The Georgia Board of Nursing has no approval role over post-licensure education. The Board, which operates within the Secretary of State's office, does not approve or oversee RN to BSN, master's or nurse practitioner programs, so a program from Alabama needs no Board approval to place students in Georgia. The Board's attention goes to who holds which license:
- Students. A Georgia resident training in Georgia for a school in another state needs Georgia licensure or a Compact multistate license issued elsewhere.
- Teachers and preceptors. Faculty or preceptors doing their teaching or work in Georgia, whether face to face or electronically, fall under that same Georgia-or-Compact standard.
- Advanced practice students. The Board states that a nurse holding Georgia APRN authorization provides their clinical instruction.
If the best Georgia candidate you know is a physician or PA, both acceptable to Troy for FNP courses, ask your faculty advisor how that Board statement applies before you ask the clinician.
Who precepts NPs in Georgia
AANP classifies Georgia as restricted. A Georgia NP practices under delegated authority or supervision from a physician, and NP Schedule II prescribing is capped, so any Georgia NP you approach already works alongside a physician partner.
Troy's rules then decide who may take you on: an NP licensed as an NP with one or more years of NP practice, or a physician, nurse midwife or PA, graduate-prepared and, under the MSN manual, unrelated to you. The FNP preceptor requirements give every detail, and HINL students have a page of their own.
Where Georgia NP students look
Roughly 6.5 million people lived in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell metro in 2025. Georgia's large systems include Wellstar, Emory Healthcare, Piedmont, Grady and Northside. Beyond Atlanta, the Augusta, Savannah and Columbus metros follow, and Columbus straddles the state line, with 265,932 of its 324,830 residents in Georgia.
Piedmont publishes its student process on its onboarding pages. Only schools can request a rotation, they do it in ACEMAPP, and each term has a one-month window (April covers fall, August covers spring, February covers summer); clearance comes only after everyone on the roster, preceptor and faculty member included, is compliant.
HB 144 revised and extended Georgia's Preceptor Tax Incentive Program, a state tax credit for Georgia physicians, APRNs and PAs who teach without pay, but it applies only to students of Georgia's own schools, so Troy hours fall outside it.
Licensing for Georgia clinical hours
Georgia's Compact participation dates to January 19, 2018, which gives you two routes to a Georgia-valid RN license: Georgia's own, or any Compact state's multistate license, Alabama's among them. Troy wants it unencumbered all semester. The practice address decides the state, so training in Columbus brings in Georgia's rule, while training in Phenix City keeps you under Alabama's.

Questions Troy students ask
Do I need a Georgia license if I live in Alabama but train in Columbus, Georgia?
Troy's license rule follows the clinic's state, so Columbus hours need a Georgia-valid license. A license issued by Georgia meets it; so does a Compact multistate license, including Alabama's. Keep it unencumbered all semester and show it before Troy will process the Georgia preceptor request.
Can a physician be my preceptor in Georgia?
Troy lists physicians (MD and DO) among acceptable FNP preceptors. The Georgia Board, though, expects the clinical teacher of an APRN student to be a nurse with Georgia APRN authorization. Settle with your faculty advisor how Troy applies both before you commit to a Georgia physician, and keep an NP with Georgia authorization on your list too.
Does precepting a Troy student earn a Georgia tax credit?
Not for Troy hours. Georgia limits the credit to preceptors teaching students of Georgia medical, dental, nurse practitioner and physician assistant programs, and Troy's programs are based in Alabama. A preceptor who also teaches students from Georgia schools can still claim those rotations under the program's rules.
Can I ask Piedmont directly for a Georgia rotation?
Piedmont's onboarding pages route every placement request through the school in ACEMAPP, inside a one-month window per term, and ask schools not yet on ACEMAPP to contact Piedmont first. Talk to your faculty advisor about how a Piedmont site would be requested before you approach anyone there.
