One Colorado row serves every online Troy student, from RN to BSN through DNP, and it stops short of any licensure ruling. Sorting out workers' compensation first
Troy's Colorado note sets a coverage requirement without saying who carries the policy or how a student proves it. That gap is worth closing before a practice sees your paperwork, since a clinical agency reviewing an agreement may well ask about it.
Put the question to the Clinical Placements Specialist early in your planning: how does Troy meet Colorado's workers' compensation condition for your program and semester? Have the answer ready when you first contact a site, and the School of Nursing's letter can move without a stall. The agency agreements page shows where that letter sits in Troy's sequence.
Colorado's Board and programs from other states
For Troy students, Colorado's Board of Nursing adds little beyond Troy's own conditions. Its program-approval rule (3 CCR 716-1, Rule 1.2) concerns schools that train people toward initial RN or LPN licensure. A Troy MSN, DNP or RN to BSN student is already licensed, and the rule gives Troy no Colorado filing to make before you begin, which leaves the coverage note and the license as your Colorado conditions.
Preceptors, prescribing and the rural credit
Full practice is AANP's rating for Colorado, with a catch for newer NPs: prescriptive authority there waits on a signed attestation of 750 mentored hours, the mentor being a physician or an APRN. Troy wants FNP preceptors with at least a year of NP practice anyway, so ask where a candidate stands on both. Troy's full list is on the FNP preceptor requirements page.
Colorado also runs a Rural and Frontier Health Care Preceptor Tax Credit for uncompensated teaching in its shortage areas. Advanced practice nurses were covered from the start, and HB22-1005 opened it to RNs and other licensed clinicians in outpatient work. That bill also stretched the credit through tax years starting before 2033, raised the yearly cap to 300 preceptors, and confined it to students at accredited colleges and universities in Colorado. A Troy preceptorship therefore does not appear to qualify.
Denver, Colorado Springs and your license
Metro Denver-Aurora-Centennial is the big one, about 3.1 million residents per 2025 Census Bureau estimates, and Colorado Springs holds about 782,000; Fort Collins-Loveland and Greeley each fall below 400,000. Among Colorado systems: CommonSpirit Health's Colorado hospitals, Denver Health, Intermountain Health (Utah-based; its Colorado hospitals include Denver's Saint Joseph Hospital), UCHealth and HCA HealthONE. Student rules vary by system.
On licensing, Colorado has operated under the current compact since January 2018. A Colorado license will do, and so will a multistate license issued by the compact state you live in, as long as your faculty advisor agrees it satisfies Troy's license rule. Colorado has no APRN Compact law. Neighbors differ on Troy's 2020 table: Arizona is a Yes with a Board approval step, and Wyoming had only applied for authorization.

Troy's 2020 disclosure lists Colorado as Yes for Troy's three online programs, on the condition that students in clinical practicums carry workers' compensation coverage. The row dates from December 15, 2020 and makes no licensure finding, so ask the Clinical Placements Specialist about Colorado's current standing before you recruit.
Who provides workers' compensation for Troy students in Colorado?
Troy's note states the requirement but not the provider. The Clinical Placements Specialist, named on the Colorado row, is the person to ask how Troy satisfies it for your program and term. Keep the answer handy; a clinical site may raise the same question while its agreement with Troy is being prepared.
Will a Colorado preceptor get the state's rural credit for teaching me?
Unlikely. The credit rewards uncompensated preceptors in Colorado's rural and frontier shortage areas, but HB22-1005 restricted it to preceptorships for students of accredited schools in Colorado. Troy is based in Alabama, so a preceptor who wants certainty should ask the Colorado Department of Revenue rather than plan around the credit.
Does a Colorado NP need 750 mentored hours before precepting me?
Colorado attaches the 750-hour mentored attestation to prescriptive authority. For your preceptorship, Troy's test is what counts: an FNP-course NP preceptor is licensed as an NP where they practice, prepared at the graduate level, and has worked as an NP for at least a year, with faculty approving the final choice.
