Michigan and Troy University's online nursing programs
Troy University's 2020 table of states for online clinicals has Michigan down as Yes, no conditions attached. The catch is licensing: Michigan still stands apart from the Nurse Licensure Compact, which means Troy's license rule there calls for a Michigan RN license, and the state ties training requirements of its own to issuing one.

Getting the Michigan RN license
Michigan sits outside the compact, with HB 4246 pending as its bill to join, so no multistate license, from any compact state, reaches Michigan clinicals. Nor has Michigan adopted the APRN Compact. Troy moves an out-of-state preceptor request only after it sees a license good where you will train; in Michigan, that means a Michigan RN license.
Before Michigan will license you as an RN, you clear a criminal background check, sit through a one-time session on recognizing people who are being trafficked, and show that 2 hours of implicit bias training were done no more than 5 years before your license date. How Michigan treats out-of-state programs
Michigan's Board of Nursing writes its approval rules for programs, found at R 338.10301 onward, and its nursing education programs page for schools located in Michigan, and neither expects an Alabama school like Troy to apply or to file notice ahead of placing students in Michigan. When the Board licenses graduates of out-of-state programs, it looks to the program's national accreditor, whether ACEN, CNEA or CCNE, instead of approving the program itself; Troy's MSN and DNP hold ACEN accreditation, covered on Troy's accreditation page.
Checking a Michigan NP preceptor
AANP classes Michigan as restricted, because NPs there prescribe controlled substances only under physician delegation. Michigan certifies an NP in a specialty only when two credentials line up: the nurse's Michigan RN license is current, and a certifying body the Board accepts has certified them nationally. So ask a Michigan NP preceptor to show both. Troy asks the same preceptor for graduate-level preparation plus at least twelve months practicing as an NP, and for FNP courses it will also consider physicians, PAs and nurse midwives.
Michigan's health department and the MSU College of Nursing once tested preceptor incentives in a pilot, paying preceptors of MSU family and psychiatric-mental health NP students according to the clinical hours they pledged. The pilot is over, it never reached other schools' students, and Michigan has passed no preceptor tax credit to take its place.

Metro Detroit-Warren-Dearborn holds about 4.39 million people in 2025 Census Bureau estimates, Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood about 1.18 million, and Lansing-East Lansing and Flint roughly 480,000 and 401,000. Large systems run from Henry Ford Health to Corewell Health, then McLaren Health Care, Trinity Health Michigan and Michigan Medicine, the University of Michigan's health system; each runs its own student process. Near the southern border, stay on the Michigan side: Indiana was No on Troy's 2020 table and Ohio Not yet determined, while Wisconsin was Yes with a note sending students to the Clinical Placements Specialist.

Is Michigan on Troy's list for online clinicals?
Troy's Online Nursing Programs disclosure, last updated December 15, 2020, lists Michigan as Yes for all three online programs. It is not a licensure determination and has not been refreshed, so confirm Michigan with the Clinical Placements Specialist before recruiting, and have your Michigan RN license in hand.
Will a multistate RN license work for Michigan clinicals?
No. HB 4246 would bring Michigan into the Nurse Licensure Compact, but it is still pending, and until it passes, clinical hours in Michigan call for a Michigan RN license. Troy asks to see that license before an out-of-state preceptor request goes anywhere.
How do RN to BSN students in Michigan handle preceptorships?
If Troy confirms Michigan, the same way as anywhere else. Troy's RN to BSN manual puts finding and contacting a qualified preceptor, in an approved setting, on the student, and the program page says students choose their preceptorship location. The program's 120 clinical hours are spread across NSG 3310, NSG 4411 and NSG 4431, and every one of them needs an approved preceptor.
Does Michigan pay preceptors who take NP students?
Not through any open program. The health department's clinical preceptor pilot with Michigan State University paid preceptors of MSU nurse practitioner students only, and it has ended. Troy's manuals list no preceptor benefits either, so present your request on its own merits.
