Troy University has not published a final answer for Maine: its online nursing disclosure lists the state as Not yet determined, a row last updated 12/15/2020. Maine's own board has no published rule aimed at schools from away placing students in Maine clinics, which leaves Troy's current position as the deciding question.

The disclosure asks only whether Troy can offer clinical experiences in each state. It is not a licensure determination for Maine, and Troy still links it as current even though the date has not moved since 2020.

Maine's board and programs from away
The Maine State Board of Nursing regulates education mainly through Chapter 7 of its rules, which governs approval of Maine's own prelicensure programs. Nowhere does it address a school outside Maine sending a student to a Maine clinic, and none of the Board's education web pages links to separate guidance on the subject.
The student exemption in Maine's Nurse Practice Act is written for people training toward a first license, which describes prelicensure students. Troy's RN to BSN, MSN and DNP students are already nurses, so what carries them in a Maine clinic is their own RN license, and Troy wants that license valid in Maine all semester. Maine's two-year transition for new NPs
AANP counts Maine among its full practice states, but independence is earned. A newly licensed NP spends at least two years supervised, either by a physician or NP or by working in a clinic or hospital led by a physician medical director, before practicing alone.
For your search, that means Maine NPs come in two groups. Those past it practice independently; those still inside it work alongside a supervising clinician, who could be a preceptor candidate as well. Portland, Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn
Greater Portland is Maine's largest metro by a wide margin, with Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn well behind. Central Maine Healthcare, MaineGeneral Health, Northern Light Health and MaineHealth are the names you will meet most often, cited here from their own sites as landmarks, not as sites with any arrangement to host Troy students. Rural practices across the state are part of the picture too, subject to Troy's rule against clinicals in your own workplace (work-setting rule).

Is my Maine multistate license enough for Troy?
Maine has issued compact licenses since January 2018. Troy's manuals want an unencumbered license for whichever state hosts your clinicals, and they are silent on compact privileges, so your faculty advisor is the person to confirm that your Maine multistate license meets Troy's requirement for a Maine site.
Does Maine require Troy to file anything before I start?
Maine's board has published nothing aimed at distance programs with students in Maine clinics; its education rule deals with Maine's own prelicensure schools. Whether anything is needed from Troy's side is a question for Troy's Coordinator of State Authorizations, who tracks each state's requirements.
Can a newer Maine NP precept me?
Troy's floor for FNP preceptors is twelve months of NP practice. Maine's 24-month supervised transition does not by itself rule anyone out; an NP in the second year may meet Troy's minimum. Your course faculty review each preceptor's background through the Preceptor Information Form and Biosketch.
