Being on the SARA list lets Troy enroll distance learners who live in New Jersey. It does not speak to clinic hours; the 2020 row does. Troy's clinicals by state page sets New Jersey beside the other 49 states.
Order of operations for a New Jersey search
Sequence matters here, because Troy parks any out-of-state request until the license question is closed.

- Square the license with the siteNew Jersey's compact participation dates from November 15, 2021. Ask your faculty advisor whether the license you hold satisfies Troy's license rule for every day of the term.
- Then start recruitingTroy's manuals put preceptor outreach on the student and approval on the faculty. Reach out to New Jersey clinicians only after Troy confirms the state for your program.
Joint protocols: how New Jersey NPs practice
New Jersey lands in the reduced-practice category of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). A New Jersey NP must hold joint protocols with a collaborating physician before ordering medications and devices, so every NP there has a physician collaborator in the picture.
For a Troy FNP student that arrangement can open doors. Troy's FNP courses accept a physician, a PA or a nurse midwife just as readily as an NP with a year of practice behind them, so one collaborative New Jersey office may hold two workable names. Troy's full criteria sit on who can precept an FNP student.
The New Jersey Board of Nursing operates under the state's consumer affairs division. Its nursing education chapter of the administrative code centers on accrediting programs at institutions licensed in New Jersey, and its clinical-agency clause deals with home-state programs sending students across state lines, not with programs arriving from elsewhere. For the state's own view of an Alabama program, the Board is the place to ask.
Where New Jersey NP students search
By the Census Bureau's 2025 estimates, some 7.1 million residents are counted in the New Jersey portion of the metro centered on New York City, and about 1.4 million more in the Philadelphia-centered metro that takes in Camden. Smaller markets include Atlantic City-Hammonton and Trenton-Princeton.
Among the larger systems, Camden is home to Cooper University Health Care, and RWJBarnabas Health, Virtua Health, Atlantic Health System and Hackensack Meridian Health are the other big names. They are reference points for where NP students commonly search, not employers that hold seats for Troy students. A site Troy has no contract with also needs agency agreements signed first.
On the other side of the state lines, Troy's 2020 table read Yes for Pennsylvania and Delaware and No for New York. Crossing a line means licensure in the state where the site sits.

Is New Jersey open for Troy FNP clinical hours?
Troy's published answer is Not yet determined, dated 12/15/2020, and no later state list has replaced it for the online programs. Only Troy can say whether New Jersey works for your cohort today. Ask the Clinical Placements Specialist and the Coordinator of State Authorizations, keep their written reply, and hold off on preceptor outreach until you have it.
Does the New Jersey status apply to Troy's RN to BSN as well?
It does. Troy's disclosure gives one answer that covers the RN to BSN, the MSN and the DNP, with no separate line for any of them. RN to BSN preceptorships in New Jersey therefore carry the same open question, and once Troy clears the state, you would still identify and contact your own qualified preceptors.
Can I enroll in a Troy online program while living in New Jersey?
Troy lists New Jersey among its SARA-authorized states, which covers offering distance education to residents. Enrolling and training are two separate matters, though, and Troy's MSN page notes that state approval rules can keep the online MSN out of some states. Confirm both points with Troy before you submit an application.
What if I relocate to New Jersey partway through a Troy program?
Troy publishes no relocation policy for its nursing students. Tell your faculty advisor as soon as a move looks likely, since a new state means a new license check, a fresh state answer from Troy and new preceptors. Your license must cover the clinical state for the whole term, opening day through the final day.
