Troy's academic calendar sets October 19, 2026 as the Fall 2026 16-week semester's final day for a drop with no academic penalty, and March 22, 2027 for Spring 2027. Because Troy never states which of its two calendars governs each online NSG course, check your course's own dates against it with course faculty. What a missed deadline costs
Under the MSN manual, a late form forces you out of the clinical course and its paired co-requisite, and faculty remove you if you stay enrolled. One late form can take two courses off your semester at once.
For FNP students the damage runs further. FNP-specific courses are offered once a year and taken in sequence, so a dropped preceptorship waits a full year to come around again and pushes the courses behind it. That is why a fast search deserves real effort even when the date feels impossible. Raise any risk with your faculty advisor before the date rather than after it, and if the date has already passed, read delayed graduation next.
A compressed plan for the days you have
Speed comes from running the steps you control side by side instead of one after another.
- Today: make sure your side is cleanCheck that every ViewPoint Screening item stays valid until the semester's last day and that your RN license covers the state where the hours will happen. A perfect preceptor cannot fix an expired TB test.
- Today: list qualified clinicians onlyBefore any call, test each name three ways: the course's qualification list, your place of work, and Troy's two-use cap.
- Tomorrow: ask several at onceSend the same clear request to every qualified office that morning: course number, total hours, dates inside the semester and what Troy asks of a preceptor.

The steps no one can rush
Once your packet is in, the timeline passes to Troy. Course faculty must sign off on the preceptor and on the setting before any agreement is processed. The School of Nursing then writes to the agency to open the preceptor and agency agreements; you cannot begin until both are returned with signatures.
Faculty then clear you, and only from that point do hours count. Time at the site before clearance is lost to the course, however useful it felt. DNP students also need signed preceptor contracts, updated clinical documents and a clinical schedule on file before the School of Nursing clears them. The practical lesson: a site with simple paperwork is often worth more than a slightly better one that needs a new contract.
A complete packet moves and an incomplete one waits. Troy does not process incomplete forms, so a missing biosketch or license copy can cost you the deadline.
Shortcuts that backfire
Under pressure, students reach for options Troy has already ruled out. Each of these looks like a quick fix and ends in a form faculty cannot approve:
- Using the NP or physician in your own unit or clinic, where Troy bars hours.
- Going back to a preceptor or site for a third time.
- Accepting hospital hours for
NSG 6619,NSG 6666orNSG 6668, when FNP hospital hours start withNSG 6680. - Sending a handwritten or scanned form when the manual asks for a typed Word document.
- Signing up one preceptor for
NSG 6666, which needs two. - Lining up a preceptor across a state line before you hold that state's RN license.
- Asking a DNP preceptor to sign the form, which the DNP manual tells students not to do.

Questions Troy students ask
Can I get an extension on Troy's Preceptor Information Form deadline?
Troy's manuals describe no extension. The MSN manual says a late form means dropping the clinical course and its co-requisite, and that faculty drop students who do not. If you can see trouble coming, talk to your faculty advisor before the date, while you still have room to act, rather than after it.
Can I submit the form now and add the preceptor later?
No. The form describes one named preceptor and setting, and it travels to your faculty advisor alongside the biosketch and that clinician's license copy. Troy does not process incomplete forms, so a placeholder submission does not stop the clock or hold your place.
Does the one-month rule count from the start of the semester or my course?
The MSN manual words it as within one month of the first day of class, for MSN clinical courses after NSG 6619. If your course opens on a different date from the semester, confirm with course faculty which day starts the count, and aim to submit well before either one.
Do DNP students follow the MSN deadline or their own?
The DNP manual sets the last day to drop without academic penalty for all preceptor forms, while the MSN manual uses the one-month rule for courses after NSG 6619. DNP students take the same 6000-level clinical courses as MSN students, so confirm with your faculty advisor which date your course faculty will hold you to.
What if my preceptor agrees the day before the deadline?
Send the complete packet that day: the typed form, the biosketch details and the license copy, together. Approval, the agency agreements and your clearance still have to follow, so your hours may start later in the semester than planned, but an on-time, complete form keeps the course open to you while those steps run.
