When a missing preceptor pushes your Troy graduation back
Troy University runs its FNP courses once a year and in sequence, so one clinical course that slips can move every course behind it by a full year. That is the real cost of a preceptor who never materializes. Here is how the delay spreads, which clocks keep running while you wait, and how to rebuild the plan.

Why one course can cost a year
The MSN manual sets the FNP track in a fixed order: NSG 6619, then NSG 6666, NSG 6668 and the NSG 6680 FNP Internship. FNP-specific courses run once a year and must be taken in sequence, NSG 6619 falls in Fall, and clinical courses run every semester except summer. A full-time student who starts in Fall needs at least five semesters, as our MSN FNP page sets out.
Put those rules together and the risk is plain. If a missing preceptor forces you to drop NSG 6619 in Fall, the course does not come back until the next Fall, and each later preceptorship moves with it. The same holds for any FNP clinical course that has to be dropped: there is no next-semester retake to catch up with. Avoiding that first drop is worth almost any effort, which is why need a preceptor fast exists.
How a delay plays out by program
The size of the ripple depends on your program and on what Troy publishes about when each course runs.

Part-time planners live in Canvas rather than on Troy's public pages, so a part-time student's revised path comes from the faculty advisor. Conditionally admitted FNP students already study part time and can finish in eight semesters.
The clocks that keep running
A delay does not pause Troy's time limits. The 2025-26 Graduate Catalog gives five years to complete the MSN, eight years for the post-BSN DNP and five for the post-master's DNP, and the MSN manual sets five years for the post-master's certificates. Nursing transfer credit expires after five years. A year lost to one missing preceptor comes out of that allowance.
Open grades have clocks of their own. An In-Progress grade on a practicum must be cleared within one calendar year, and an Incomplete within no more than 9 weeks after the semester; either one left unfinished becomes FI, which counts as an F. Our incompletes and time limits page has the full rules.
Stepping away and coming back
Some students decide a semester off beats a rushed placement. The 2025-26 Graduate Catalog handles this by the length of the absence: a student out for up to two years contacts the Student Services Office and stays in the original program. At two years or more, you file a Readmission to Graduate School Application and follow the degree requirements current at readmission, which may differ from the ones you started under.
Coming back also means compliance. Troy's clinical documents must stay valid from registration through the end of the semester, and several items renew every year, including the background check, drug screen, TB test, flu vaccine and physical. Check ViewPoint Screening well before the semester you return so an expired item does not become the next delay.
Rebuild the plan with your faculty advisor
A delay is easier to absorb when the new plan is written down early. Work through these points with your faculty advisor:
- Get the revised sequence in writingWhich semester each remaining clinical course now falls in, and which didactic course pairs with it in Student Self-Service.
- Check the graduation application dateTroy takes graduation applications through Self-Service, and its academic calendar lists November 6, 2026 for Spring 2027 graduates and April 2, 2027 for Summer 2027. A later finish means a later application.
- Line up the rescheduled course's preceptor earlyMonths of notice let you choose a preceptor and site that fit the course, sit outside your workplace and stay under the twice-per-program limit, with the form in well before its deadline.
- Keep your license and compliance currentAn unencumbered RN license in the clinical state and current ViewPoint items for the whole semester.
How we protect the rest of your timeline
A delay caused by a missing preceptor should happen once. We start recruiting for your rescheduled course as soon as the new plan is set, which leaves time to find a preceptor in your area who fits the course, sits outside your workplace and has not already been used twice on your record.
With that lead time, the form, biosketch and license details are ready well before the deadline, and any site that may need a new formal contract is flagged early. Questions Troy students ask
If I drop NSG 6619, when can I take it again?
The MSN manual places NSG 6619 in Fall and says FNP-specific courses run once a year, in sequence. A dropped NSG 6619 would normally wait for the next Fall, with the later FNP courses following a year behind. Confirm the revised sequence with your faculty advisor, since part-time planners are kept in Canvas.
Do I have to reapply if I sit out a year?
Not for an absence under two years, according to Troy's 2025-26 Graduate Catalog: you contact the Student Services Office and stay in your original program. At two years or more you file a Readmission to Graduate School Application and follow the degree requirements in place when you return.
Does an IP grade hold up my graduation?
An IP keeps a practicum open while you finish its hours, and it must be cleared within one calendar year or it becomes FI, which counts as an F. Ask your faculty advisor how an open IP fits with your graduation application date before you file it in Self-Service.
Which time limit applies to my Troy program?
The 2025-26 Graduate Catalog gives five years for the MSN, eight for the post-BSN DNP and five for the post-master's DNP, and the MSN manual sets five years for the post-master's certificates. The catalog words the MSN limit two different ways, so confirm your own start and end dates with your faculty advisor.
Will a delay change when I can sit for the FNP certification exam?
Troy says its FNP graduates are eligible to apply for the national certification exam, so your exam timing follows your completion date. A year added to the program moves that eligibility by the same year, along with any licensing steps that depend on it, so re-plan those around the revised finish.
