Troy University online nursing from Alaska: clinicals and the Board's preceptorship registration
Troy University's clinical-availability table lists Alaska as a Yes, so its online RN to BSN, MSN and DNP students can do clinicals there, with one condition written into the row: you apply for your preceptorship with an Alaskan preceptor through the Alaska Board of Nursing. The Board registers you personally
Alaska is unusual: its Board registers the individual student. When a Troy graduate student trains there, the Board of Nursing expects its own application for the preceptorship, and its rules (12 AAC 44.460) cover clinical practice for any APRN course of study run from outside the state.
The Board's form is 08-4253, and its fee is non-refundable. Three items go with it: evidence of your RN license in good standing, confirmation that you are currently in Troy's APRN program, and a copy of the four-way agreement (Troy, the facility, your preceptor and you) that the Board must approve. The registration stops at 12 months or when that preceptorship ends, if sooner, and may be renewed a single time.
Troy's School of Nursing sends preceptor and agency agreements only after faculty approval, so the Board filing naturally follows Troy's agency agreements. RN to BSN students face a lighter test in the Board's FAQ: a nationally accredited program approved by its home state, plus an RN license without restrictions issued by any US state or territory.
Who can precept you in Alaska, and where students look
AANP's map gives Alaska nurse practitioners full practice authority. On the Board's registration form, a preceptor is an APRN or physician whose Alaska license or privilege is active and unencumbered, who practices in a focus close to yours, and whose job is to oversee, teach and assess you at the site. By 2025 Census Bureau figures, roughly 406,000 people live in metro Anchorage, around 94,000 in Fairbanks-College and fewer in the Juneau micropolitan area. Providers range from Foundation Health Partners (Tanana Valley Clinic, Fairbanks Memorial Hospital) to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer, HCA Healthcare's Alaska Regional Hospital, Providence Alaska Medical Center and Anchorage's tribal Alaska Native Medical Center. Each sets its own student terms.
Licensing: an Alaska RN license, with no compact shortcut
No compact license reaches Alaska. It has stayed out of the Nurse Licensure Compact, and the Board's own compact page notes the legislature has passed nothing to join; HB 131 and SB 124 appear there as pending bills for 2025-2026. Alaska also sits out the APRN Compact, which it has not enacted.

Does Troy University offer online nursing clinicals in Alaska?
On Troy's 2020 disclosure, yes: Alaska is listed for all three online programs (RN to BSN, MSN, DNP), and the note sends students to the Alaska Board of Nursing to apply for a preceptorship. The date on that row is December 15, 2020 and it does not rule on licensure, so check Alaska's current status with Troy's Clinical Placements Specialist first.
When does an Alaska preceptorship registration expire?
The Board's rule stops a registration at 12 months or at the preceptorship's close, whichever is earlier, and allows one renewal. Because Troy FNP students move through several clinical courses, ask the Board how a single registration maps onto them all.
Does my Troy faculty member need an Alaska license too?
Sometimes. Alaska's rule, 12 AAC 44.090(h), reaches faculty of programs based elsewhere once their clinical grading time in Alaska, counted together with other nursing teaching or consulting there, adds up to more than 20 working days during a single licensing period. Troy manages that side; ask the Clinical Placements Specialist whether it touches your course.
Can an Anchorage NP precept me on their own authority?
Alaska NPs have full practice authority, and the Board accepts either an APRN or a physician. Troy then applies its own tests for FNP courses: an NP license where the preceptor practices, graduate preparation and a minimum of one year working as an NP, and the MSN manual excludes relatives and your own workplace.
